Lochmaddy’s new marina - with space to berth 26 boats on floating pontoons - has been well used in its first season by Scottish and international yacht visitors, bringing extra tourist trade into the island.

The first cruise ship landed passengers in May and some 300 yachts visited this summer resulting in a boost in trade for local businesses.

Yachtsman Martin Rosestedt of Finland said he is impressed with the facility.

He and his crew have spent the last three days here, buying groceries in the village store and eating meals in the adjacent hotel.

Without it, it is unlikely he would have come near Uist to berth on his way between Oban and St Kilda.

Mr Rosestedt said: “This is a great improvement because many yachtsmen like marinas because they are very convenient and you can get stores.”

It also gives the crew a chance to step ashore without getting wet or using a dingy from an anchorage.
