Heavy weather continues for Tuesday      4/2/13

Continuing blustery conditions risk affecting some island ferry sailings on Tuesday.

Monday’s storm will ease to a Force 9 strong gale on Tuesday resulting in high waves along the Hebrides coast.

While the storm moves on to affect the central belt, the islands will face strong tail winds and wintry showers accompanied by rough seas in the Minch.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Strong to gale force winds are generating large waves around the coast of northwest Scotland, which could lead to disruption to ferries and to the potential for waves to break over the top of sea defences.”

Meanwhile, pupils in the Uists and Benbecula were unable to sit their prelim exams today (Mon) as Sgoil Lionacleit was closed due to the storm.

The Uist were heavily battered winds up to 75mph recorded in the area.

All schools south of Benbecula were shut including Eriskay and Barra schools.

Local transport operator D A Travel cancelled services on Uist due to adverse weather.

All Western Isles ferries were cancelled apart from the MV Hebrides which gained extra speed when pushed along by the following sea towards Ullapool but was forced to slow down by a couple of knots to punch her way through the waves on the return trip to Stornoway.
