Island accidents as freezing weather continues             5/12/11

Police are advising motorists to exercise caution on the roads with further snow expected in the north and the northern isles tonight (Mon).

The snow is expected to be followed by freezing temperatures resulting in hazardous driving conditions tomorrow morning.

Police advice is take care and drive according to the conditions. Leave plenty of time for your journey and ensure your vehicle is ready for winter driving.

Numerous vehicles went off the road in the first snowfall of the winter.

A school bus carrying young pupils was involved in a crash post office van sliding out of control on the icy conditions in South Lochs. They were forced to wait for a snow plough to come to their assistance.

An earlier bus was apparently trapped by the untreated roads at Calbost for over an hour. It took about three hours and a smash before children got to school. According to villagers the snow plough was unable to get through the village of Marvig and when the primary school bus arrived to collect children in the village parents walked to where the road gritting ended to drop off their children. Due to the incident with the earlier school bus the bus was overcrowded and pupils were apparently not adequately seatbelted on seats.

A Hydro crane truck slid into a stream while driving on the ungritted road at Lower Bayble in Point, Lewis this morning. Fortunately no-one was hurt.

This Hydro truck was powerless to stop skidding off the untreated icy road
