The Western Isles Constituency Labour Party is backing Johann Lamont for the new leader of the Scottish Labour Party.

The Glasgow Pollok MSP who is the current deputy leader, is pitched against MSP Ken Macintosh and MP Tom Harris for the post.

Ms Lamont has links with the islands. Her brother Angus is married in Lower Garrabost while Leodhasach nephew Donald Lamont is tipped by many as a rising  star in the local political party.

Western Isles Labour bypassed Stornoway-raised politician Lewis Macdonald for its choice as Scottish deputy leader.

Instead, at a meeting in Stornoway’s Bridge Centre last night, it endorsed Anas Sarwar, MP for Glasgow Central, for the position.

Current leader Iain Gray is resigning after the party’s disastrous results in the May elections.

The collapse of the vote nationally was mirrored in the Western Isles where there are grumbles amongst some of the party faithful that the local body needs fresh faces as part of a revamp if it is to achieve unity.

Ballot papers will soon be issued to all Scottish Labour members across the country as well as hundreds of thousands of party supporters who pay a political levy through their affiliated organisation or trade union. The final result will be known on 17 December.
