Top awards for island healthcare heroes        17/11/11

Two outstanding health professionals and teams from NHS Western Isles have been presented with a national accolade at the Scottish Health Awards 2011 for their invaluable contribution to Scottish healthcare.

Radiographer, Ishbel Walker was joined by Well North Outer Hebrides Team as worthy winners at the prestigious award ceremony in Edinburgh.

The judges selected senior radiographer, Ishbel Walker from the hospital in Balivanich as winner of the Unsung Hero Award to celebrate her outstanding dedication to serving communities across Uist and Barra.

Ishbel has worked as a single-handed radiographer in the Western Isles for over 11 years and provides routine and emergency services to local patients.  Her commitment enables specialist visiting consultant clinics in Benbecula and she provides on-call services seven days a week to help some of the island’s most critically sick and injured patients.

Travelling on country roads, often in adverse weather conditions, Ishbel provides vital diagnostic services in life-threatening situations.  Through her dedication, skill and commitment, these island communities have access to high quality, timely diagnostic imaging close to home.

The panel of judges agreed that Ishbel embodies the true spirit of NHSScotland through her unwavering dedication to rural health services.

The Well North Outer Hebrides team at Stornoway Health Centre was  acknowledged for developing an innovative and dedicated screening programme to reduce cardiovascular disease in the Western Isles.

The team scooped the Healthy Living Award after impressing the panel of judges by delivering an innovative and highly effective screening service to the population of the Western Isles on a purpose-built mobile unit.

Through the delivery of targeted screening in local communities, the team make a significant contribution towards improving the health and wellbeing of the population of the Western Isles; successfully supporting people to make lifestyle changes that will reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The team has successfully piloted the use of point of care testing to allow a more holistic assessment of cardiovascular risk. This has enabled the use of more targeted interventions at the time of assessment, which are focused on lifestyle changes.
