Western Isles votes to stay in EU

24 June 2016

Some 8,232 islanders voted to stay while 6,671 people wished to leave.

The outcome works out at 55-45 for retaining EU membership.

The size of the electorate was 21,259 with 70.2% or 14919 people actually casting a vote. There were 16 spoiled ballot slips.

The count took place in the Lewis sports centre after the polls closed at 10pm on Thursday.

A chartered helicopter transported ballot boxes from Barra, Benbecula and Uist to Stornoway.

The individual Western Isles results will be added to the overall UK total to give a simple in or out decision.

In the 1975 European ballot, the Western Isles was resoundingly against the Common Market. The islands were one of just two communities across the UK to vote out - the other was Shetland.
