Voting underway in community landlord election

25 August 2023

The ballot to elect five people to the board of Stòras Uibhist has opened.

The election closes at 4pm on Wednesday 6th September.

Postal voting slips have been issued to members of the community landowner.

Eight candidates are standing including four existing directors - DJ Cameron, Calum Mac Millan, Donnie Steele and Catriona Walker - seeking re-election.

Also throwing their hats in to the ring are islanders, Dave Adey, Ronnie MacKenzie, Iain Stephen Morrison and Alistair Nobles.

A total of five places are vacant this year and the new directors will take their places alongside Norman MacAskill and Mary Schmoller.

The ballot is being conducted on behalf of the organisation by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s electoral services team.

The result will be announced on 7th September and the body’s annual meeting will follow at St Mary’s Griminish on 14th September.

Darren Taylor, chief executive of Stòras Uibhist, said: ‘It is good to see such a large number of members of the community putting themselves forward for election to the board this year.

“Local democracy is at the heart of community land ownership and all of our members will now have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates.”
