Vodafone fix mobile signal after weeks of problems     9/11/11

There are hopes that three weeks of poor mobile phone reception in the Stornoway area has been permanently fixed by communications operator Vodafone.

The firm says the problem was a high-order Cable and Wireless transmission fault which affected the connectivity of the site.

Vodafone engineers worked over the weekend to repair the fault and have now implemented a more robust fix to the issues.

MP Angus Macneil who chased up the mobile phone operator over the faults said: “This should mean that customers in the area will have a much more stable service. As this fault has been occurring over many weeks now, I am pleased that Vodafone have also confirmed that engineers will be keeping an eye on it for the meantime.

“I also raised the issue of compensation to contract customers, Vodafone have suggested that contract customers should call the customer services team on 191 to discuss this on an individual basis.”

“I hope that this brings an end to the weeks of unreliable service for Vodafone customers in Stornoway.”

Lousi Maciver of Stornoway mobile phone retailers Tech Mobile says the Vodaphone fault affected a significant number of people.

He said: “People were coming into the shop all the time asking what had happened to the signal. Many thought they had been cut off but it was the poor signal which caused people unable to make calls in the town area.”

He added: “It means islanders are getting a poorer service. People on a contract are not getting a service they are paying for.”
