Union accuses Government of “robbing pensions”    29/11/11

“We will not have our pensions stolen” that’s the message from striking UNISON members from Western Isles Local Government as they join millions of other public service workers from across the UK in a day of action for Pensions Justice.

The strike has been called over changes, and proposed changes to public service pensions . The UK Government has changed the way future inflation related increases will be applied.

It means, workers eventually losing around 15% of the value of their pensions. In addition the Government are proposing other changes which will reduce the value of pensions and are threatening to raise the retirement age for public service workers.

Flora Somerville of UNISON Western Isles Local Government branch said. “Going on strike has been a last resort for us – but we’ve been forced into it.

“The Government have put through changes which will mean our pensions will decrease by as much as 15% - and they haven’t ruled out further changes which could mean people getting even less - or having work longer to get it.

None of the money raised by these measures will go into paying for pensions - instead all of it will go to paying off debt run up bailing out greedy bankers. This isn’t fair - everyone deserves a decent pension”
