“Predator” sentenced for underage sex with girl       26/5/12

A former Lewis resident described as a "predator" after having unlawful sex with an underage teenage girl has been sentenced to jail for 12 months.

Patrick Nolan was also placed on the sex offenders register. He confessed to the crime from his prison cell while serving a previous sentence for an unconnected matter Stornoway Sheriff Court was told on Friday.

The 26-year-old, whose address was given as Inverness Prison, revealed "fresh information" to police officers who were investigating his relationship with a girl under 16 years said procurator fiscal David Teale.

Mr Teale said police were not aware of the incident Nolan confessed to in a letter. He made a full admission to two officers who went to Inverness Prison to interview him.

Mr Teale said Nolan turned up drunk at a house in the Western Isles on 14 August last summer.

An adult knew him and he was "made welcome." Later, he was left asleep on the kitchen floor.

The fiscal explained that during the night a teenage girl in the house came downstairs into the kitchen and "they engaged in sexual intercourse."

Solicitor Kevin Macpherson said Nolan would not return to the island when got out of jail.

He said the offence occurred after Nolan had suffered the break-up of a long-term relationship which was the first period of stability in his life.

He "reverted back to alcohol and went completely off the rails" with recklessness, instability and drunkeness going on all the time."

Sheriff David Sutherland stated: "Young girls must be protected from older predatory men."

Nolan would have received an 18 month jail term if it was not for his co-operation with police said the sheriff
