Record numbers of runners for hill races      11/8/11

Record numbers of runners competed in annual hill races at both ends of Uist. Mainland runners took advantage of the 24-hour gap between the events to compete in each. Dave Rodgers of Lochaber AC won both events with Craig Maddocks a close second in each.

Of the 74 participants, Rodgers was first down Ben Lee in North Uist in under 45 minutes. Maddocks was only  90 seconds behind .

First woman home was Kate Jenkins, who yet again set a new course record for with a time of 52 minutes 31 secs. She came in third overall.

In South Uist, Stephen Scott, from Lochboisdale, was airlifted off Ben Kenneth and taken to the Stornoway hospital by  the coastguard rescue helicopter after injuring his leg at the summit on Sunday evening.

The other 62 runners made it back down the hill led by Dave Rodgers in 30 minutes 23 seconds closely followed by Craig Maddocks and Stuart Simpson.

Islander Kerry Macphee was fourth overall and the first woman across the line with a time just a fraction past 34 minutes. She was awarded the Ben Kenneth Shield which is traditionally  reserved for the fastest local.
