I am standing as an I ndependent candidate in the forthcoming local government elections
for the Stornoway South Ward. I stand as an Independent candidate because I will
always put the wishes and the needs of the people in the Ward first, and I believe
that is the way the people of the islands want it to remain. I am a fluent Gaelic
speaker, and I have lived and worked all my life on the Isle of Lewis. I have been
involved in many community projects for several years including presenting popular
radio shows on Isles FM, and I am also a drummer with the Lewis Pipe Band.
I believe that a lot of potential exists in my local area for expansion and regeneration,
and I would like to see a sustainable future for my young friends, the local community
and the islands. I strongly believe that young people need the opportunity to use
their skills and education for the benefit of the islands, and they should be given
a chance to live and work here.
I ’m a young, local man with big ideas; it ’s time to GIVE YOUTH A CHANCE
If I am elected to the Comhairle my main interests will be :
- More facilities for young people and families – At the moment there is limited access
to facilities, leisure and local events for the young people of the islands. Our
community needs more youth involvement and community projects for all families and
young people, and I will fight for that.
- Town Centre Parking – A park - and - ride service should go a long way to help the
current difficult situation which is causing frustration and costing town centre
businesses. It would allow more disabled parking spaces in the town centre and would
be a positive solution to ease the depressing traffic congestion.
- Residential Area – Play parks, p ublic b ins, d og w aste and traffic speed control
measures are areas that need improving in my local community. We lack provision
of these facilities, which if they were provided, would make this an even better
place to live.
- Apprenticeships – I hope you will agree that much more needs to be done to keep locals
in work - especially in the construction industry. Apprenticeships help young people
gain the skills they need to further their trade, but this cannot happen due to the
current state of construction industry at the moment on the islands. I promise to
work to improve that.
- Gaelic Language - I am a fluent Gaelic speaker, educated through Gaelic medium education
in Stornoway Primary, and the Nicolson Institute, and I feel that the Gaelic language
is a vital part of our culture and tradition. I will work to make Gaelic more appealing
to young people and parents to ensure the survival of Gaelic as a living community
asset.
- Working For My Community – I will, if I am elected on May the 3 rd , be there to
represent YOU and to get your views across. I promise to give my time and effort
to my local constituents and to fight hard for the causes and issues that will undoubtedly
arise that will affect our day - to - day lives. My door will be open to you.
- Outer Hebrides Transport Group - The huge increases in freight charges imposed by
the Scottish Government are going to cost real jobs which will affect many people.
I am opposed to this household tax and I fully support the OHTG in their efforts
to stop it.
- Fuel Prices - I feel that something drastic has to be done about the ever increasing
price of fuel in the islands, and the current soaring prices are badly affecting
businesses and hard pressed families, and If elected I will work with my council
colleagues to address this problem as a matter of urgency.
Give youth a chance this May. VOTE UILLEAM MACLEOD 1
