Third day of ferry cancellations             30/1/13

Continuing high winds and heavy seas have caused a third day of serious disruptions for ferry passengers.

Stranded passengers who were storm bound in Ullapool after the MV Hebrides turned back from a very rough crossing in the Minch on Tuesday were further delayed twice today. The ship had been caught out by the storm which intensified earlier than expected. She turned around after a new forecast of 60 knots wind speeds at Stornoway tfor arrival time - above the port’s pre-set cut-off rule for safe access.

Cal Mac said the vessel would have been unable to enter the harbour area and it was deemed best to return to Ullapool.

The vessel did not sail in this morning  as planned due to adverse weather and this evening’s voyage was put back by at least an hour until the wind abates.

The MV Finlaggan sailings for Tarbert, Uig and Lochmaddy were abandoned in the morning. The persistent bad weather delayed special sailings between North Uist and Skye.

The Leverburgh and Eriskay ferry services also suffered cancellations on Wednesday.

The MV Clansman is due to run to Castlebay and Lochboisdale on Thursday - the first scheduled voyage on the route since the storm forced her to put off Tuesday’s timetable .
