Tall ships visit             13/7/11

At least 18 vessels are anticipated to visit Stornoway this week as part of The Tall Ships Race 2011. Stornoway is a designated guest port for the event.

Many of the ships are expected to be open to the public and big crowds are expected in Stornoway as the arrival of the Tall Ships co-incides with the Hebridean Celtic Festival and the Continental Market.

Comhairle Leader Angus Campbell said: “This really is a spectacular summer for the Outer Hebrides – appropriately so in this Year of Scotland’s Islands of which the Tall Ships race is part. In addition, the Lewis Chessmen exhibition continues to attract visitors to the Islands and the Hebridean Celtic Festival is about to get underway. And we’ve still got the Mod to come in October.”

The Tall Ships are expected in Stornoway from Thursday 14th July to Saturday 16th.

In anticipation of large numbers of people wanting to have a look at the Tall Ships, Stornoway Port Authority is closing Pier Number 1 for parking from Thursday evening.

People may wish to consider their travel arrangements and choose to use public transport or car share.

The closure of Pier No 1 car park will mean less spaces in town. To assist with parking, the Comhairle would remind people that they can use the overflow car park at the Acres (opposite the Comhairle offices) or the Nicolson Institute car and bus park at Smith Avenue from where it is a short walk to the town centre.
