Supermarkets run out of fresh food           29/12/12

Island supermarket shelves were stripped bare on Friday with shoppers snapping up the last of fresh bread, vegetables, meat and milk with numerous lorries stuck in mainland ports due to a raft of ferry cancellations because of the severe weather.

Deliveries will be made to food stores shops on Saturday afternoon as a lull in the weather allows sailings to recommence.

There was no shipping in the Minch as yesterday’s storm intensified with larger fishing vessels running for shelter. The local fleet was tied up in harbour before the storm hit.

Western Isles ferries were stormbound due to wild seas and severe winds in the Minch with winds gusting up to hurricane speeds affecting parts of the Western Isles.
