Summer judo school                   8/7/11

The George Kerr Junior Judo Club is running a four week summer school for Stornoway’s 4-15 year olds, following the overwhelming success of the martial arts club which was launched with the backing of The Scottish Salmon Company in February.

The club has over 75 members and Dr George Kerr and his team regularly take their message of good exercise and a healthy diet to more than 200 children who attend the local primary schools. According the George the response has been fantastic prompting the creation of the new summer school.

Running on Thursday 14th July, Thursday 4th August and Thursday 11th August, the programme costs just £10. Anyone interested should go to the Sandwick Community Hall on 7th July. The class for under-8s starts at 10am and the class for older children starts at 11am.

The programme, including the free hire of Judo suits, has been made possible through the continuing sponsorship of The Scottish Salmon Company, which employs over 300 people across the Hebrides and the West Coast of Scotland.

Dr George Kerr is a former British and European champion and has been teaching kids Judo for over four decades. He is one of only a handful of living people in the world today to hold a tenth Dan in Judo. As well as receiving his CBE in this year’s New Year Honours List, George was also awarded the Order of the Rising Star by the Japanese government in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of judo earlier this year.
