The former Stornoway ferry MV Suilven has been saved from the scrap yard after a Fiji businessman decided to give her a new lease of life.

The Suilven will have her name changed for the first time in her nearly 40-years working life which saw her carry passengers and cargo on different ends of the globe.

The former Caledonian Macbrayne ship was recently advertised for scrap after eight years with Blighwater Shipping in the Fiji chain of islands in the South Pacific.

The 87-metre long Norwegian-built vessel ended up there after sold to Strait Shipping in New Zealand in 1995, running between North and South islands.

For 20 years prior to that she sailed the Minch and was the largest ship in the Caledonian Macbrayne fleet when introduced in 1975 to replace the old MV Clansman. At the time, Ullapool also supercede Kyle as the mainland destination port for Lewis passengers.

She has now been purchased by Venu Shipping for an undisclosed sum.

New owner Ben Naidu plans to refit the aging ship for an inter-island service in Fiji.
