Vigilante fined      28/2/13

A vigilante who targeted the home of a sex offender also terrified an innocent elderly woman.

Andrew Campbell of Midglen, Castlebay, Barra, was fined £600 when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court this week.

The 21-year-old previously pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening manner at the property on Lewis.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Campbell urinated on the front doorstop and shouted threats.

He said the Merchant Navy trainee yelled: "You're a dead man, I am going to kill you" and starting kicking the door.

He said police reported the woman was "frantic with fear."

Campbell initially denied any involvement.

Lawyer John McGeehan highlighted the case was a perfect example of innocent people getting caught up in vigilante attacks.

Mr McGeehan said such behaviour should not be “tolerated” and his client was "remarkably stupid" and displayed "fairly childish behaviour" with an element of showing off.

Campbell targeted the house some 12 months after a sexual offence committed by one of the occupiers, the court heard.

The fine has to be paid at £50 per month.
