Stornoway plane in smoke alarm  alert                    3/1/13

An emergency response was activated after an alert on a Stornoway-bound plane yesterday.

An alarm indicated smoke emitting in the baggage hold of the Eastern Airways aircraft about 20 minutes after it took off from Aberdeen

The plane with 13 people onboard aborted its flight to Lewis and returned to Dyce Airport..

Fire crews with water jet hoses were ready at the runway when the plane landed at lunchtime.

The alert was put down to a faulty smoke detector. The plane was taken out of service while it was fixed.

Passengers continued their journey on a different plane about an hour later.  

An Eastern Airways spokesman, said: “The captain operating yesterday afternoon’s T3 554 flight from Aberdeen to Stornoway had a cockpit warning indication from the baggage bay smoke detection system, and as a precaution decided to return to Aberdeen to have the aircraft checked.

“The Jetstream 41 aircraft with 10 passengers and three crew on board landed safely at 13.25. On arrival, the airport’s fire service attended, but were later stood down.

“Passengers were transferred onto another aircraft.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but the safety of our passengers and crew is our primary concern.”
