Indecent exposure offender avoids jail sentence            27/2/13

A Lewis man with a habit of exposing himself in public has avoided a prison sentence.

Mark Reid of 6 Druim An Aoil, Ranish, North Lochs, was “probably past his last chance” of retaining his freedom acknowledged his lawyer John McGeehan at Stornoway Sheriff Court this afternoon (Wed).

The 23-year-old fisherman previously pleaded guilty to deliberately exposing his genitals in a sexual manner to two teenage girls at Portrona Drive, Stornoway on 5 November 2011.

He also previously admitted committing a sex act at a window overlooking Macaulay Road, Stornoway in April 2010.

Reid risked going to jail because the court heard that his employer was not keen to give him time off for community service on a Friday.

However, after a last ditch phone call, the lawyer assured the sheriff that Reid would be able to undertake any unpaid work after all.

Reid was placed on the sex offenders register and participate on a sex offenders treatment scheme.

He is banned from being in Stornoway town centre between 8pm and 6am daily until 2018 - apart from when working on a fishing boat.

He is not allowed to use the internet at all for the next five years and is banned from staying anywhere but at his home address in Ranish.

The fisherman is also forbidden from drinking alcohol for three years and must provide a breath test to police or social worker if requested.

In addition, police are allowed access, on request, to any computer, mobile phone or electronic communication equipment he may have.

He was ordered not to expose himself in public.

He must also disclose the names and nature of any relationship as requested by his supervising officer.

Reid was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid community service work and placed on a three year supervised community payback order.

Sheriff David Sutherland sternly warned him any breach of any condition "will almost inevitably result in a prison sentence."

He added: "You are put on a warning here - any breach and you are in custody."
