There was a brisk trade for good quality rams at the annual tup sales at the Stornoway auction mart this week. Good prices for the nearly 200 animals going through the ring saw bidders typically offering between £200 to £400 for the best rams.
The supreme champion ram was sold for £650, the best price for a number of years. The pure cheviot shearling was home bred by Donald Macleod on his croft in Aird, Point. It was purchased by Norman Maciver.
Donald Macleod presented with trophy for Supreme Champion ram by Iain Maciver of Lewis & Harris Auction Mart.

The ram was bred from Mr Macleod’s own registered Heaval flock. It was sired on the island from a ram originally from the Bordnaclaven flock in Caithness stock.
Mr Macleod said he switched from blackfaces to the heavier cheviots a few years ago and has been pleased with the results. He made the change because of the low returns but has got on very well with cheviots.
He winters all his flock outside on the croft and they are exposed to all weathers during the year.
Mr Macleod though he ram had a chance of winning something but “I never expected it would be the supreme prize.”
He added: “I always put animals through the mart to support the facility. We need to do all we can to keep a mart present for local crofters.”
