Jobs at the Peacocks outlet on Lewis have a strong chance of being saved if a suitable rescue deal to take over the retain fashion chain is secured.

The firm fell into administration on Wednesday and nearly 250 people were made redundant at its Cardiff head office.

A number potential bidders are eyeing up a takeover this week and though some shops may shut after any sale it is thought the Stornoway store is well placed to remain trading.

Island staff have participated in a conference link with administrators KPMG.

Peacocks in Stornoway is understood to be well performing and returning favourable results so is in a good position to be kept open after any deal for the whole chain or sold on as part of a break-up string of shops.

However, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, which already has a shop in Stornoway town centre, is one of the trade buyers said to be mulling an offer.  It is unclear if it proposes to run Peacocks as a separate business selling youth fashions.

If it plans to convert the chain to focus on its line of clothing for the older market, it may consider having two similar outlets in Stornoway as surplus to its requirements.

Tescos and Poundland are also rumoured to be interested in buying closed down Peacock shop buildings to expand their own business.

Peacocks filed for administration after an earlier bid to rescue the debt-ridden chain failed. The company was forced to make the move after the Government-owned Royal Bank of Scotland was said to have pulled the plug on a restructuring deal.
