Death of local musician            13/11/11

A highly talented Stornoway  guitarist well known on the Lewis music scene in the to the last generation of islanders has died.

John Macdonald who was better known as Johnny Doll died suddenly at his home in the town’s Kennedy Terrace.  

The 70-year old retired civil servant was a gifted guitarist and was a prominent figure as rock and roll became a popular music style in 1960s Lewis.

He performed with The Diamonds at town and country dances and also with The Karltons in the 1970s.

Before bowing out of regular gigs, he latterly played along with Morris Fido at the Cabarfeidh Hotel. His trademark was the twangy guitar renditions of The Shadows instrumental hits.

The funeral took place from the High Church with interment at Sandwick on Wednesday.
