Hundreds of ferry passengers are caught up in travel chaos after the Stornoway ferry broke down today.

Engine problems has left the MV Isle of Lewis still stuck in harbour this evening, hours after her normal 2.30pm departure time.

The ferry is now not expected to sail until later which creates serious knock-on delays for the crowd of passengers waiting at Ullapool.

The return voyage which should have left at 6.15pm this evening.

It may  be closer to dawn tomorrow before the travellers stuck on the mainland get across the Minch.

It is unclear if the problems would affect Monday’s sailings but a backlog of traffic may  be expected on top of a very busy summer schedule.

Cal Mac’s website  said the  Sunday sailing from Stornoway  “is delayed until further notice.”

A Cal Mac spokesman said: “The delay is due to maintenance work which has taken longer than expected. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
