Drugs courier jailed after drugs bust 3/8/11
A Liverpool drugs courier caught smuggling £6,000 of cannabis into the Western Isles has been jailed for one year.
Grandmother Marion Glennon, 43, of 65 Grant Road, Dovecot, Liverpool, previously pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis resin.
Stornoway Sheriff Court heard today she was stopped by police who were waiting for her coming off the ferry docking at Stornoway at lunchtime on Friday 17th September last year.
Fiscal David Teale said they received intelligence she was travelling through Ullapool for Lewis.
He said she admitted she had drugs to police and claimed she was meeting a friend.
She was carrying eight bars of cannabis in carrier bags. Each weighed nine ounces with a total street value of around £6,000, said the fiscal.
He explained she was meant to wait for a phone call from Liverpool which would tell her where the handover would take place on Lewis.
There, she would meet someone who would pay her in exchange for the drugs. Then she was to return to Liverpool, said the fiscal.
Lawyer Angus Macdonald said she was in debt to loan sharks and targeted by drug dealers who “promised her £500 to deliver this package.”
She is “a poor pathetic woman being taken advantage off by dealers who could not care less” what sentence she got.
He highlighted: “How fortunate we are in the Western Isles not to be living in that drug infested, depressed environment Ms Glennon lives in.”
Cannabis was not the most serious of drugs he said, pleading she keep her freedom.
But Sheriff David Sutherland said custody was the only option
