Full scale airport emergency       7/8/11

A full scale emergency was declared at Stornoway airport when a jet carrying 148 people indicated a serious problem as it flew over the ocean around 4pm today (Sun).

The Boeing 737 was flying from Denmark to Iceland when a rear hold warning light signalled a potential serious situation.

The plane initially changed course to land at Stornoway and ambulances, four police cars and fire-engines rushed to the airport. Stornoway lifeboat was also alerted.

But the aircraft was later diverted to Inverness airport where a full range of emergency services were waiting near the runway.

An airport spokesperson said the plane landed safely at Inverness.

She said: “All 148 passengers and crew are well and a decision whether to continue with the flight has yet to be made.”
