Islands put on storm warning              7/12/11

A storm is set to hammer the Western Isles tomorrow. Strong winds will increase early morning and continue to blast the islands into Friday.

The storm will affect all parts of the Hebrides though the maximum effect locally will be in South Uist and Barra where hurricane-strength winds may be experienced.

The authorities are asking members of the public to be prepared.

It is anticipated that the weather will bring widespread icy conditions and snow on all roads in the region in the early hours of the morning.

Motorists are asked to be alert to regular road reports and not to call police, fire or 999 for road information or other weather related advice, unless it is a real emergency.

Inspector Mardon also reminded drivers to be prepared when travelling, saying: "Drivers should take heed of weather forecasts and road conditions, plan their routes accordingly and allow plenty of time for their journey. Be prepared for the worst by taking blankets, extra clothing, a shovel, food and drinks, and making sure your mobile phone is fully charged and you have useful contact numbers.

"If there is limited mobile coverage or your battery is low and you need help, a text has more chance of getting through."
