St Kilda Day in Uig 5/8/11

A major St Kilda-related event is being held at Uig Community Centre today (Friday). Organised by the group which is taking forward plans for a St Kilda Centre on the cliffs above Mangersta, the programme will include visits to the proposed site as well as showings of rare archive film dating back as far as 1908.

In the evening there will be the first-ever presentation by Historic Scotland on the digital mapping work that they are currently carrying out on St Kilda.

The technology being used has only been applied once before, anywhere in the world, at Mount Rushmore in the United States and the Uig audience will be the first to see early results of the magnificent images which are being achieved on St Kilda.

The day's programme will conclude with a family ceilidh during which Calum Ferguson, who has close ties with St Kilda and has written extensively on the subject, will share his knowledge of the islands' culture and traditions.

Events begin at 2 p.m. and everyone will be welcome to participate at any stage of the programme
