Sollas Week kicks off today with Highland Games       22/7/11

►   Sollas Week programme

The North Uist Highland Games at Hosta today marks the start of Sollas Week.

Another event is a talk will be given about the Udal Archive Project.  The Udal is a historic site of national and international importance within the district.  Deborah Anderson, Comhairle Archaeologist and Lead Researcher Beverly Ballin Smith will discuss the post excavation currently being done on the archive.

Those present will also be given the opportunity to give their views and also find out more about how the project will be progressed in future years.  It is also hoped that there will be people present who remember the dig taking place or maybe even took part in it.  Organisers are keen to collect as much information as possible about what went on during the many years the dig took place.

Another highlight of Seachdainn Sholais will be Lachie’s Annual Trek.  This is led by Lachie MacInnes and is always a laugh a minute as well as good exercise.  This year will be a coastal walk of approximately 13 miles from Gerrann Mill along the shoreline past Skipinish, Grenitote, Ard a Mhorain, and a wee detour to see Udal before heading to Vailish and along Traigh Iar and finishing back at the marquee in Malacleit.

Other popular events are back as well including the Quiz night, Clay Pigeon, Local Produce Market and the Promise Auction – come along and you can bid for anything from a specially made birthday cake or scones to babysitting or a days labour at the peats or even a boat trip to one of the off-shore islands.

Sollas are also excited to welcome back the dynamic trio of Deoch ‘n’ Doras, the popular lively ceilidh band to play at a dance in the marquee on Wednesday 27 July plus there will also be a traditional ceilidh/ concert the following evening with a host of local dancers, singers and musicians including mod gold medallist Gilbert MacMillan.

As the Taigh Sgire is out of action this year due to renovations all events will be taking place in the marquee unless otherwise advertised.

The committee would again like to thank all those who voted for the Taigh Sgire in the Jubilee People’s Millions and look forward to welcoming everyone to a warm, bright, rejuvenated Taigh Sgire in 2012.
