Fears of severe job losses for Harris                 12/6/14

Up to 24 jobs in Harris are at risk as one of the islands biggest employers prepares to shut its island office

The national building repair and maintenance services and facilities management GSH Group proposes to centralise all its UK-wide operational and administration activities in its headquarters in England.

It follows the loss of major UK clients to competitors.

Staff at GSH Tarbert are being given a 30 day consultation period, pending closure of the office, it is understood.

The number and type of potential job losses is serious for Harris given the absence of alternative office-based, computing and administration employment on the island.

An added blow is any redundancies would particularly hit a relatively younger age group with the risk many would leave Harris to seek work elsewhere, thus worsening the island’s depopulation problem.

The jobs blow arose after GSH Group - a leading facilities and energy management company - confirmed a review of its operational and support activities across all of its UK offices.

A GSH spokesperson said the review was being undertaken with a “view to potentially creating a centralised administration function based in Stoke-on-Trent.”

They added: “The Tarbert office is one of the offices potentially impacted by this review.

“There are 24 employees attached to this office.

“The company is keen to stress its ongoing commitment to operating within Scotland and is working hard to support those employees who might be affected.”
