First timer scoops traditional gold medal            21/10/11

The Gold Medal for traditional Gaelic singing has gone to Lewis and Dundee.

Ladies winner Wilma Kennedy was in the unique spot of being interviewed, and congratulated live on TV by big sister Mary Ann Kennedy as the competition results were, for the first time, broadcasted as-they-happened on BBC Alba. Wilma, 42, won the An Comunn Gold at the Dingwall Mod in 1991.

TV researcher Duncan Mackinnon came up trumps in the men’s competition. It was the first time the Sgitheanach - now living on Lewis -  had competed in the National Mod. He was was aged eight when, at the provincial Skye mod, he last sang competitively. The Harris songs he sung in the event were written by his great uncle.
