Wind power plans for  water company’s wind turbines         3/1/13

Scottish Water has got the go-ahead to build the first ten of about 30 wind turbines its plans for the Western Isles.

A third of the 5kw generators have received approval to be sited by a treatment plant by Holm Farm, outside Stornoway. The turbines will be about 20 metres high to the blade tip.

Scottish Water has earmarked a further six or so locations in the islands.

The company says that electricity is is single biggest cost particularly for the energy demanding treatment plants for water and waste water.

It hopes that producing its own power will help keep customer charges down and reduce its carbon footprint.

The water utility said its aims to generate 10% of its own power by 2015 - double the present level of renewable energy from its sites across Scotland.
