Two Western Isles schools scooped top prizes when they took part in the annual Highlands
and Islands Celebration for SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs, at Eden Court
Theatre, Inverness last week.
Nineteen schools from across the region gathered to showcase their achievements in
science and engineering and compete for a range of prizes, as well as undertaking
a series of science, technology, engineering and maths problems set by a range of
local companies. Event partners were the Scottish Government and Lloyd’s Register
Foundation.
Breasclete Primary (pictured) won the primary STEM Challenge, taking home a trophy
for their school. Iochar Primary received a highly commended award for their exploration
as part of the Scottish Natural Heritage Primary School Non-Native Species Research
Project. Both schools received £100 prize money.
Melanie Riddell, Programme Manager, based in SCDI’s Inverness office, said: “Our
network of clubs in the Highlands and Islands has expanded rapidly and we now have
over 120 clubs throughout the region, many of which are supported by local companies
such as LifeScan Scotland and Morrison Construction. These partnerships are vital
to let young people see real life science and engineering and the range and quality
of careers available locally.”
