Comhairle in “facile macho posturing” over schools   31/10/11

Sirs,

Well, well, well!

After months of facile macho posturing over the schools closures, the Labour-dominated Comhairle appears to have finally accepted the advice of the SNP group of councillors and decided that pouring millions of pounds of our money down the drain in a hopeless fight against the Scottish Government is not a very good idea.

It seems that councillors have now been disabused of the belief that solicitors and barristers work for the minimum wage and the proposed judicial review could be obtained for £40,000. More like £4 million after the Scottish Government's costs have been taken into account.

As far as Carloway School is concerned, the judicial review would probably have failed because the Comhairle may be in breach of sections 6 and 7 of the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act of 2010 whereby local stakeholders such as Carloway Community Council should have been officially informed of the plan to close the school and of the intention to hold a consultation meeting. It was not.

Perhaps all those Labour councillors who call themselves "independents" have suddenly realised that elections are just six  months away and their policy of closing schools, sacking teachers and decimating public services may not prove popular.
