Three Western Isles companies have received awards for business excellence by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry.

Harris Tweed Hebrides, Galson Estate Trust and Hebridean Seaweed all won the top prize in their class meaning a third of the awards went to the Hebrides. In addition HIAL airports won a highly commended accolade.

At the award ceremony, SCDI Highlands and Islands Chairman, Michael Urquhart urged the Scottish Government to increase capital investment in the north to protect the area’s long-term economic prospects and enable future growth.

Mr Urquhart said there was a need for improved transport links and the upgrade of roads, ferries and air services. He feared budget cuts may threatened the vision for the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Hebridean Seaweed Company was set up in 2006 and is now the largest processor of seaweed in Great Britain. The company currently employs eight people at its factory and provides employment for 25-30 self employed seaweed cutters across the Western Isles.

Managing Director Martin Macleod, said: “Since the inception of the company it has always been our policy to work closely with government and environmental bodies and local communities to ensure that all our operations are carried out in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.”

Brian Wilson, chairman, Harris Tweed Hebrides said: “"We have a fabulous product, with a world-wide cachet, and a superb team at the Shawbost mill.  The essential job was to introduce Harris Tweed to a new generation and to re-position it as a young, fashionable fabric at home and abroad.  We inherited death notices for the industry but are now delighted to face the problems of success with demand outstripping supply and an urgent need for more weavers"

Lisa Maclean of  Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn said: “‘We are delighted to be presented with this prestigious award. It is an exciting time for us and to be chosen for this is a true reward for the hard work that has been carried out towards becoming a low carbon community. We will continue to seek out innovative low carbon solutions as it plays a huge part in a sustainable future for everyone on the Galson Estate.’
