Three Western Isles companies have received awards for business excellence by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry.
Harris Tweed Hebrides, Galson Estate Trust and Hebridean Seaweed all won the top prize in their class meaning a third of the awards went to the Hebrides. In addition HIAL airports won a highly commended accolade.
At the award ceremony, SCDI Highlands and Islands Chairman, Michael Urquhart urged
the Scottish Government to increase capital investment in the north to protect the
area’s long-
Mr Urquhart said there was a need for improved transport links and the upgrade of roads, ferries and air services. He feared budget cuts may threatened the vision for the University of the Highlands and Islands.
Hebridean Seaweed Company was set up in 2006 and is now the largest processor of
seaweed in Great Britain. The company currently employs eight people at its factory
and provides employment for 25-
