On course to re-open Scalpay shop         28/11/11

Plans to re-open a grocery shop on Scalpay after nearly five years without a shopping facility are gathering speed.

Staff are being recruited to work in the former mini-market which has now been taken over by a local self-help group.

Islanders have been forced to travel across the bridge buy groceries in mainland Harris since the private owners closed it down in 2007.

A community co-operative called Buth Sgalpaigh Ltd (Scalpay Shop Ltd) is refurbishing the premises which will include a café as well as a general provisions’ store.

The co-operative is at the stage of hiring staff and say it is on course to open in the Spring.

People have the opportunity to invest in the fledging venture as a community share option scheme is open to all - including non-islanders.

Shares cost £25 each and voting rights are limited to “one member one vote” regardless of amount of shareholding. nformation on how to purchase shares is available on www.scalpaycommunityshop.co.uk
