Share sale for community shop         10/7/11

Scalpay Community Shop has broken through its target of £10,000 worth of shares to help get the grocery store and café off the ground.

So far supporters have bought £13,000 of shares and the offer remains open for the venture which is expected to open next spring.

Supporting the project is Community Development Officer Coinneach Morrison thanked the: “incredible generosity of the community.”

Interim Chair of Buth Scalpaigh Pete Dickson said: "The level of community support for this project has been incredible.

“Along with the recent offer of community ownership from Scalpay landlord Mr Fred Taylor, everyone one is hoping that this is the beginning of a new dawn of community led initiatives which serve to secure the future sustainability of the island"

An meeting is expected to be called in the near future to dissolve the interim committee and elect a panel from the newly formed list of cooperative members.
