Salmon poaching          23/11/11

In the first case of its kind for many years, a Lewis youth was charged with poaching for salmon.

Stephen Macleod, 19, of 13 Cearn Hiort was fined a total of £700 at Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday.

He previously pleaded guilty to taking salmon without a permit, possessing illegally caught salmon and refusing to co-operate with water bailiffs on the evening of 20th July.

Fiscal David Teale said Macleod was spotted using a rod to fish on the private Garynahine River.

He fled the scene but water bailiffs waited to see if he would come back to a nearby vehicle.

When he saw them on his return he ran off again throwing a rucksack containing two salmon into the river.

The bailiffs caught him but he refused to give his details or accompany them to a police station.
