Consultation on rural schools             18/10/11

The Commission on Rural Education is seeking views on how to best develop education in rural areas in future and to examine the link between rural education and rural communities.

Individuals and organisations from across Scotland are invited to provide their views.

Commission Chair, Sheriff David Sutherland, said: "This Commission has the potential to make real improvements to life chances of children and young people across rural Scotland. I would encourage anyone with a view on any aspect of the delivery of rural education to take this opportunity to have their voice heard."

The responses to this Call for Evidence will be essential to the Commission's considerations and final recommendations."

Established in July 2011, the Commission on Rural Education is tasked with examining how the delivery of education in rural areas can maximise the attainment, achievement and life chances of the young people living in those areas of Scotland.

The Commission will also review the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 and its application. The Commission is committed to ensuring all key stakeholders have the opportunity to contribute to its work, and to ensuring its work is underpinned by hard evidence. The Commission's call for evidence opens from October 13, 2011 and will run until January 12, 2012.

MSP Alasdair Allan commented: “The best source of opinion would be for as many local people with an interest in rural education to respond to this consultation.

“Given the on-going debate about this topic in the Western Isles it is important we get the legislation right for the future. Although legislation was strengthened in the last Parliament, the view has been expressed that this is still not adequate, so it is important that we get this right.

“In light of the strong views on this subject in the islands, both as Minister and local MSP I would be very keen for communities in the Western Isles to make their voices heard.”
