The Royal National Mòd has kicked off in the Western Isles heralding a fabulous explosion of music and song, drama and poetry, choirs and sports.

Over a thousand competitors and their supporters will descend upon the islands bringing Scotland’s second largest festival home to the Hebrides.

At last night’s opening ceremony in An Lanntair, Gaelic minister and island MSP Alasdair Allan attended the official opening ceremony together with, president of An Comunn Gaidhealach Iain Macleod and Mòd director Janet Macdonald.

Councillor Agnes Rennie, Chair of the Gaelic Committee of Western Isles Council provided a welcome to the isles. Local convenor Cllr Alex Macdonald give an official welcome to the Mòd. Music was provided by Jenna Cumming and Calum Alex Macmillan.

The Barra Highland Dancers gave a graceful display of their talents to the gathered crowd and the 2011 Royal National Mòd was officially opened by John Angus Mackay, Chief Executive of Bord Na Gaidhlig.
