I was born and brought up in Newvalley and have lived in Stornoway and Newmarket for the past 27 years. I attended Laxdale School and the Nicolson Institute and after 4 years study in Aberdeen returned to the island where I have been in business for the past 26 years. My family also attended Laxdale Primary and the Nicolson and my wife teaches in Laxdale.

Living and working here I do understand local concerns and values and I have been involved with various organisations and groups such as The Stornoway Regeneration Group where we have brought work and improvements into the town centre. I am Regional Chairman of the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) where we help a wide range of young and fledgling businesses to start up and grow. Creating and maintaining jobs is a crucial role of the local council and one which I will always prioritise.

I have now completed five years as councillor for this ward and during this time I have worked hard to ensure all issues raised within the ward are addressed quickly and effectively.  For me, the Number One priority is to look after the needs of the people I represent in all areas of the ward which encompasses the former ward areas of Manor, Castle, Cearns and Laxdale. I will always respond quickly to individual issues raised with me.

I have also directly or in partnership with my fellow councillors accessed and attracted funds for a whole host of improvements in the ward. Examples include

  • Traffic management and road safety improvements
  • New Road and Path developments
  • Significant spending on both Laxdale and Stornoway Primary Schools
  • Direct Financial Assistance to a wide range of community groups of all ages and to local charities and voluntary groups.
  • Environmental Improvements
  • Additional Facilities and Equipment in Care Homes
  • Improvements in Laxdale Hall to bring it back into community use

Everyone living in these islands is keenly aware of the financial challenges that face individuals, families, voluntary groups, business and local government and it is vitally important that we have experienced, effective and financially aware local councillors to deal with these issues. We must protect our families and be fair in the way we deal with all groups.

With over 25 years business and financial experience, 5 years of council service in the Stornoway North Ward and a thorough understanding of local concerns and economic priorities, I will continue to work hard for my constituents and will serve my ward diligently should I be returned as the local councillor; and I will seek to identify and remove any areas of waste, duplication or inefficiency in the way the council does things so that the very best use is made of the reduced funding available and that services are maintained.
