Allan lobbies for RET on inter-island ferries         5/11/11

SNP MSP Alasdair Allan, has been lobbying Transport Ministers for Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) ferry fares to be extended to cover the Sound of Harris and the Sound of Barra. At present the reduced fares only apply on routes between the mainland, the Western Isles, Coll and Tiree.

The Government is expected to reach a decision about the future of RET in the near future.

Alasdair Allan said: “The Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) has made travel to and from the islands dramatically more affordable for islanders and tourists alike since the SNP government introduced it after it first took office in 2007.

“With the pilot period now coming to an end, the Transport Minister will have to decide shortly on the future of the scheme in the Western Isles, Coll and Tiree.”

He added: “I have been arguing strongly that, despite the huge budget cuts which Scotland has suffered at the hands of the UK Government, RET should be continued. We should also honour our promises to roll the scheme out to other island communities in Scotland over the course of this Parliament.

“Although, as a Government, we have never made any undertakings to provide RET fares on inter-island ferries, I have in recent weeks also been making the case to Transport Ministers that the Sound of Barra and Sound of Harris would benefit from RET, and that these two routes should be part of the roll-out of RET across the West of Scotland over the next few years.”

Mr Allan said: “I have made the argument to the Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Development that reducing fares on these routes would clearly bring an additional economic benefit to the islands, and I will continue to make this case as we approach a final decision on the shape of RET into the future.”
