The developer behind plans to build 40 wave machines in the sea off the west coast of Lewis has welcomed new potential funding for the marine energy industry by the release of over £200 million fossil fuel funds from Ofgem to the Scottish Government.

The deal gives Scotland access to an additional £103 million of funding with the remainder put into setting up the £3 billion UK-wide Green Investment Bank.

Martin McAdam, chief executive of Aquamarine said: “Scotland has immense potential to build a strong economic future based on renewable energy and these funds can provide a vital boost to our growing wind, wave and tidal sectors.

“The coming decade will require tens of billions of pounds of investment - not only to accelerate the commercialisation of our world-leading marine energy and offshore wind sectors - but to rewire Scotland so it can become a net energy exporter in the decades ahead.

“The fossil fuel funds and the Green Investment Bank will both play crucial roles in leveraging the private sector investment this exciting new future will bring.

Aquamarine Power holds two seabed leases off the Hebrides. One is for a 10MW demonstration development between Shader Barvas and Fivepenny in Ness, known as the Galson site.

The other is a 30MW lease  between Dalbeg by Carloway  running up to Eoropie, Ness.
