The Comhairle is to loan office staff with umbrellas to encourage them to walk in the rain rather than take the car.

The initiative is one of a raft of environmentally friendly ideas to help cut business travel expenses by 5% this year.

Another is a proposal for a communal pool of manual and electric bikes to get employees to pedal to work.  Switching personnel over to the benefits of electric cars is also being mooted.

The council says it is “committed to reducing its impact on the natural environment by encouraging the least environmentally damaging methods of getting to and from work and business travel.”

Instead of racking up mileage expenses by driving cars spouting pollution into the atmosphere, staff are urged to take the bus to meetings, get on their bike, or grab a lift from a colleague.

Car sharing, walking and cycling offer important health and environmental benefits, stresses the authority .

Going on foot is the most sustainable mode of transport of all but  bosses highlight: “If employees wish to walk to work or between locations in town or walking at lunchtime the possibility of a change of weather may discourage any walking.  It is therefore proposed to have a box of umbrellas in specific locations which staff can borrow and return after their journey.”

In a drive to cut travel costs and help the environment, more services should be available via the internet so islanders can avoid making so many petrol-fumed journeys travelling to the main council offices to pay their council tax and rent.

It also proposes using more video conferencing, setting up a pool of electric cars, and flexi-working at home for staff.
