Racist incidents in Western Isles          21/12/12

Two racist incidents occurred in the Western Isles area last year despite the official statistics indicating none have happened.

A breakdown of the number of racial incidents across Scotland published by the Scottish Government wrongly claimed there were zero incidents in the islands in 2011 to 2012.

However, over one weekend in June 2011 there were two separate incidents of a racist nature.

A man was charged with uttering a racist slur to staff in a Chinese restaurant in Stornoway.

Another person was charged after shouting anti-English abuse at a neighbour in rural Lewis.

Both men pleaded guilty to the offences when they appeared in court.

Northern Constabulary said an “administrative error” meant two situations were not published as racial incidents.

It appears these were the only two events with a racist overtone reported to police during the 12 month period, whether it proceeds to court action or not.

A racist incident is defined as any event “perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person."

It does not have to result in police taking the matter further and includes altercations which are reported but do not come to court.
