Spòrsnis gets “community MBE” award                  27/9/11

The Spòrsnis sports centre in Ness has been presented with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2011. The award is made to volunteer groups for outstanding work in their local communities.

Calum Iain Macleod, Spòrsnis Chairman, said, “We were initially delighted to have been nominated but over the moon when we got news we had won it. The award is a recognition of the work carried out by volunteers over the past 16 years as well as the ongoing voluntary work in keeping the place open on a daily basis.

The award has given a massive boost to everybody connected with Spòrsnis and we thank Cllr. John Mackay, who nominated us, as well as Mr Sandy Matheson, Lord-Lieutenant of the Western Isles for making the Award to us.”

Mr Matheson said: “It gives me great pleasure to present this Award on behalf of Her Majesty, The Queen. The whole community in Ness richly deserves this Award for all the hard work, which was not without some significant setbacks, in bringing this magnificent project to fruition. This is an excellent example to other communities in proving that community support and perseverance pays off.

“This facility is not just of benefit to Ness but also to our wider island communities. I wish you all every success in the future.”

The community-led £ 2 million Spòrnis project was originally meant to be an Millennium project but sourcing funding for the ambitious scheme took longer than anticipated.

It opened in 2008 after years of hard fundraising and offers a fitness suite, with cycles, treadmill, multi-gym and rower machine. There are three sports courts and viewing gallery and a sauna room.

Since its opening Spòrsnis has been managed and run by a voluntary committee along with a number of part-time staff and a team of some 30 volunteers who keep the centre open for over 70 hours each week.
