Islanders recognised in Queen's New Year Honours List 29/12/12
Two islanders have been recognised in Queen's New Year Honours List.
Community activist Jessie Macneil receives a British Empire Medal for services to
the community on Barra. Mrs Macneil has been involved in many local campaigns including
retaining ferry and air services, crofting and improving services for the elderly
and vulnerable on Barra. More recently she spoke out against proposed council cuts
to Western Isles voluntary organisations and to community run services. Until her
recent retirement she was the head of Voluntary Action Barra and Vatersay and is
also involved with the Scottish Crofters’ Federation.
Maime Macleod who lives in Stornoway has been awarded a MBE for voluntary services
to Save the Children. The retired radiographer has volunteered and managed the Save
the Children shop in Stornoway for the past 27 years.
