Four taken to hospital after car crash       2/9/11

Four people including a baby were taken to hospital after a car crash on Lewis today.

Stornoway fire crews used cutting gear to free a trapped person from a mangled vehicle.

A Dutch woman was feared to have sustained spinal injuries from the accident. She and her husband were traveling in one car while a woman and toddler were in the other.

Emergency services rushed to the scene by Knock school in Point after the two vehicles collided. It is understood the vehicles were coming from opposite directions when the smash occurred around 9.30am.

Ambulance personnel attended to the injured woman before rushing her to the Stornoway hospital some four miles away. The other three people were also taken to hospital. None had life-threatening injuries.

A hospital spokesperson said two were being kept in for treatment while the other pair went home later.

A spokesperson for Northern Constabulary said Stornoway police was making inquiries into the accident.

The road was shut to traffic for about an hour.
