Support for pension strikes            4/12/11

Sirs,

The local Labour Party's stance in supporting the public sector strike has got to be admired. The coalition cuts to pensions is nothing but scandalous and should be abandoned.

What bemuses me about the Labour Party stance is that in 1997 when Labour came to power, Gordon Brown put in place a taxation which is robbing private sector pensions of billions of pounds.

Many people struggled to make provisions for retirement only to find the Labour Government taking it away.

Why does the Labour Party support public sector pensions but not private sector pensions where the damage is much greater.

Like many I see this public sector support by them as an empty gesture and hypocritical. They are not kidding anyone.

Successive UK governments keep telling us we need to make provisions for old age whilst at the same time penalise those who have been fortunate to afford the high costs.

I have no doubt had the Labour Party held onto power, they too would have subjected public sector pensions to similar cuts. The economic actions by UK parties only fuels the case for independence.
