Olympic flame in sunrise visit              10/6/12

The Olympic flame is visiting the world famous Callanish Stones on Lewis at dawn on Monday morning (Mon).

A lone piper will play as the sun rises over the eastern hills and a torch bearer carries the Olympic flame.

Bagpiper Anna Fraser will be wearing a specially designed Harris Tweed outfit depicting the emblem colours of the 2012 Games.

Torchbearer Kirsty Wade is a former Commonwealth Triple Gold Medallist and also competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

On Lewis she runs fitness classes and organises the annual Stornoway Womens` Cancer Challenge 5k run which has raised £60,000 for cancer research over the past five years.

Stornoway is one of only eight locations in Scotland to host the Torch Relay.

The Olympic flame arrived off a charter plane which landed at Stornoway airport today (Sun).  The arrival was extremely low key with no special event organised as London 2012 Olympic committee were anxious to respect the local Sabbath observance tradition as much as possible.

Local car hire firms received a boost in trade as the official Olympic torch team rented most of their dozen or so vehicles on the island rather than ship them over by ferry.

The Olympic staff squad was slimmed down to about 60 personnel for the Hebridean relay - normally some 140 people are on hand.

Despite a gruelling 6.30am start, hundreds of spectators are expected to watch the flame being carried around a three mile route in Stornoway on Monday morning.

Police will halt traffic at Engebret’s roundabout 15 minutes before the torch sets off from Western Isles Council offices on Sandwick Road and, until 7.30am, access into Stornoway will be disrupted as the flame passes through.

Torchbearers will run down James Street, past the Cal Mac ferry MV Isle of Lewis and into the centre of town. Lewis Pipeband is due to perform at Perceval Square as it passes and the flame will take a detour over the YM bridge at Bayhead up to the Lews Castle.

During the 15 minute period the flame stays around the Lews Castle and the college, quad bike champion John Mitchell will carry the Olympic flame on a quad while Gaelic celebrity Kathleen MacInnes will entertain the crowd with Gaelic songs.

On the final stretch, the flame will be taken along Matheson Road returning past the front of the council offices and up Smith Avenue. Torchbearers will run a lap on the running track before lighting the cauldron.

It will burn for about 20 minutes before a lantern is lit from the cauldron and taken to the airport for the flight to Inverness for the next stage of the tour.

Entertainment at the Stornoway athletics track carries on until about 8am will feature Kathleen MacInnes singing with school pupils from across the Western Isles and Kirstie Anderson from IsleDance leading a mass dance routine.
